Frank Serafini

Frank Serafini is a Professor of Literacy Education and Children’s Literature at Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, where he focuses on literacy education, multimodality, and children’s literature. He holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Reading Education) from Arizona State University (2001), as well as an M.Ed. in Elementary Education (1992) and a B.A. in Business Administration from Fort Lewis College (1984). A former elementary classroom teacher and literacy specialist, he has received honors including the International Literacy Association’s Mayhill Arbuthnot Award as Distinguished Professor of Children’s Literature and the International Visual Literacy Association’s Distinguished Educator Award.

Serafini is the author of numerous professional books for educators, including Reading Workshop 2.0: Teaching Reading in the Digital Age and earlier titles such as The Reading Workshop, Reading Aloud and Beyond, Lessons in Comprehension, Around the Reading Workshop in 180 Days, and Classroom Reading Assessments. He is also known for Reading the Visual: An Introduction to Teaching Multimodal Literacies, published by Teachers College Press, and subsequent work on visual and multimodal literacy. In addition to his scholarly publications, he has written and illustrated children’s picturebooks, including the Looking Closely series.
