G. Williamson McDiarmid

G. Williamson “Bill” McDiarmid is an internationally respected education scholar and Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as Distinguished Chair of Education at East China Normal University in Shanghai. Earlier in his career he served as Boeing Professor of Teacher Education at the University of Washington and was a professor of teacher education and co-director of the National Center for Research on Teacher Learning at Michigan State University, following work as a secondary English and history teacher.

McDiarmid’s research has focused on teacher learning, professional development, and preparing educators to teach diverse learners, and he has authored or co-authored multiple books, journal articles, and research monographs in these areas. In addition to Agents of Impact: How Education Can Empower Students to Change Themselves, Their Communities, and Their World, his recent works include Learning for Uncertainty: Teaching Students How to Thrive in a Rapidly Evolving World and Improbable Probabilities: The Unlikely Journey of Yong Zhao, as well as articles such as “Time to Rethink: Educating for a Technology-Transformed World” and “Innovations and Collaboration to Influence Policy and Practice: Global Deans Speak.”
