George J. Roy

George J. Roy is a Professor of Mathematics Education and Department Chair of Teacher Education in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina, where he focuses on middle level mathematics education and the integration of technology in mathematics classrooms. He holds a B.A. in mathematics from Rollins College, an M.Ed. in mathematics education from the University of Central Florida’s Lockheed Martin/University of Central Florida Academy for Mathematics and Science, and a Ph.D. in education with an emphasis in mathematics education from the University of Central Florida. Prior to his university appointment, Roy taught middle school mathematics for eight years in Orange County Public Schools in Florida and earned National Board Certification in Early Adolescence Mathematics.

Roy’s scholarship and professional work center on preservice teachers’ mathematical content knowledge, uses of dynamic technology in middle school mathematics classrooms, and university–school district partnerships. He is a coauthor of Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching: Grades 6–8 (Unifying Topics for an Understanding of Functions, Statistics, and Probability) and has contributed to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics initiatives, including serving on the middle school author team for Catalyzing Change in Middle School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations. His publications and presentations also address topics such as sociomathematical norms, small-group mathematics instruction, and number talks for fraction comparison[
