George Takei is an American actor, author, and activist, best known for portraying Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek. He was born Hosato Takei on April 20, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, and has been widely recognized for his work in LGBTQ+ advocacy and for speaking publicly about the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans, including his own family’s experience.
His graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy was written with Justin Eisinger and Steven Scott and illustrated by Harmony Becker; it was published by Top Shelf Productions in 2019. The book recounts Takei’s childhood in Japanese American incarceration camps during World War II and later won an Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work.
