Gerald G. Duffy

Gerald G. Duffy, EdD, is a literacy scholar and teacher educator known for his work on explicit reading instruction, comprehension, and the development of adaptive teachers. He is the former William Moran Distinguished Professor of Literacy and Reading at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University, where he spent about 25 years teaching teachers how to teach reading and conducting classroom-based research. Earlier in his career, he taught in elementary and middle schools and served in a laboratory school at the State University of New York College at Fredonia. A past president of the National Reading Conference (now the Literacy Research Association) and a member of the Reading Hall of Fame, he has worked with teachers and children across the United States and internationally and has written or edited several books and over 150 articles and research studies on reading instruction.

Duffy is the author of Explaining Reading: A Resource for Teaching Concepts, Skills, and Strategies, a widely used teacher resource that has gone through multiple editions, including later versions retitled Explaining Reading: A Resource for Explicit Teaching of Concepts, Skills, and Strategies aligned with contemporary standards. His other books include Improving Classroom Reading Instruction and additional works focused on classroom reading instruction and teacher development.
