Gregory C. R. Yates

Gregory C. R. Yates is an educational psychologist and Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Educational Psychology at the University of South Australia, where he has long been associated with the School of Education at the Magill campus. He holds a BA (1972) and MA (Hons, 1974) from the University of Auckland and a PhD (1981) from Flinders University of South Australia. His academic work focuses on the application of cognitive and social learning theories to educational issues, including areas such as cognitive information processing, social learning theory, and statistical analysis in education. He has also served on the editorial board of the journal Educational Psychology.

Yates is co‑author, with John Hattie, of Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn (Routledge, 2013/2014), a synthesis of research on learning that connects cognitive psychology with classroom practice and has been translated into multiple languages. In addition to this work, he has published scholarly articles on topics such as the cognitive psychology of knowledge, impostor phenomenon in tertiary students, and gendered views of literacy and children’s attitudes to reading.
