Gretchen Givens Generett

Gretchen Givens Generett, Ph.D., is Dean and Professor in the School of Education at Duquesne University, where she also holds the Noble J. Dick Endowed Chair in Community Outreach. A qualitative researcher and national leader in educator development, her scholarship brings together educational foundations, African American studies, feminist studies, and concepts of justice focused on agency, empowerment, and action. She has spent more than two decades in academia researching and teaching about teacher professional development, educational leadership, cultural diversity, and equity-focused practice.

Generett is a co-author of Five Practices for Equity-Focused School Leadership (ASCD, 2021), as well as Taking Up Equity Leadership: A Guide for Building Equity-Focused Schools and Systems and The American Dream for Students of Color: Myths and Barriers to Educational Success. She has published extensively in peer‑reviewed journals and edited volumes and co‑edited Black Women in the Field: Experiences Understanding Ourselves and Others through Qualitative Research. Generett holds a B.A. in English from Spelman College and a Ph.D. in Social Foundations from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
