Harry Noden

Harry Noden is an English educator and author best known for his influential work on integrating grammar instruction with the writing process. He taught eighth-grade English for 30 years and has also taught at Kent State University, focusing on helping students use grammatical structures to create vivid, image-rich writing. His classroom experience underpins his approach to grammar as a set of “brush strokes” that writers can use to craft their prose, a metaphor that has been widely adopted in writing instruction materials.

Noden is the author of Image Grammar: Using Grammatical Structures to Teach Writing and Image Grammar, Second Edition: Teaching Grammar as Part of the Writing Process, both published by Heinemann. His Image Grammar workshops have been attended by thousands of teachers, and his strategies—such as participles, appositives, adjectives out of order, and action verbs as “brush strokes”—are frequently cited in professional literature on writing pedagogy.
