Harvey Smokey Daniels

Harvey “Smokey” Daniels is a literacy educator, author, and national consultant who has worked as a city and suburban classroom teacher, college professor, researcher, and teacher coach over a career spanning more than four decades. He is known for his pioneering work on student book clubs and literature circles, documented in books such as Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs and Reading Groups and Mini-Lessons for Literature Circles. Daniels has authored or coauthored numerous professional books for teachers on reading, writing, and inquiry-based learning, including Subjects Matter, Second Edition: Exceeding Standards Through Powerful Content-Area Reading, Texts and Lessons for Content-Area Reading, Texts and Lessons for Content-Area Writing, Comprehension and Collaboration, Revised Edition: Inquiry Circles for Curiosity, Engagement, and Understanding, Upstanders, The Curious Classroom: 10 Structures for Teaching with Student-Directed Inquiry, and Content-Area Writing.

Daniels frequently collaborates with other leading educators, including Stephanie Harvey and Steven Zemelman, and he has also served as an editor for collections such as Comprehension Going Forward and as coauthor of Best Practice, Fourth Edition and The Best Practice Video Companion. He works with elementary and secondary teachers across the United States, Canada, and Europe through demonstration lessons, workshops, and consulting, with a
