J. Richard Gentry, PhD, is an American literacy researcher, educational consultant, and former elementary teacher and university professor. He has written extensively on spelling, writing, and beginning reading, and is the author of Brain Words: How the Science of Reading Informs Teaching and Breaking the Code: The New Science of Beginning Reading and Writing.
According to his professional biography, Gentry earned an A.B. in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.Ed. in Reading Education from the University of Virginia, and a PhD in Education from the University of Virginia. His work has also included numerous books, textbook series, journal articles, and educational workshops focused on early literacy and dyslexia.
