Jacob Steiss

Jacob Steiss is a literacy researcher and teacher educator whose work focuses on secondary reading and writing instruction, particularly source-based and disciplinary writing in grades 6–12. He serves as a Translational Research Fellow at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, supported by the UMSL Charter School Translational Fellows program, and previously worked as a Project Scientist for the WRITE Center in the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine. A former secondary English language arts and social studies teacher, he has spent several years designing and facilitating professional learning for teachers to improve literacy instruction. Steiss earned his PhD in Education from the University of California, Irvine.

Steiss is an associate editor of Writing Instruction Across the Disciplines: Evidence-Based Practices in Grades 6–12, edited by Steve Graham, Carol Booth Olson, and Tanya Baker. His research and writing include work on U.S. secondary students’ source-based argument writing in history and on dimensions of text-based analytical writing, as well as practitioner-oriented pieces on civic writing and online collaborative writing for secondary classrooms.
