James J. Mazza, PhD, is a professor of educational psychology and a member of the School Psychology Program at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he has taught and conducted research on adolescent mental health for more than two decades. His work focuses on internalizing disorders and adolescent suicidal behavior, including the impact of exposure to violence, depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder on youth.
Mazza is a coauthor of DBT Skills in Elementary Schools: Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving in Grades K–5 (DBT STEPS-E), a comprehensive social–emotional learning curriculum based on dialectical behavior therapy skills for universal use in elementary classrooms. He also co-developed and coauthored the DBT STEPS-A social–emotional learning curriculum and its manual, DBT Skills in Schools: Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving for Adolescents, designed to teach coping and decision-making skills to students in grades 6–12.
