James M. Lang

James M. Lang, Ph.D., is a Professor of Practice at the Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Notre Dame and Emeritus Professor of English at Assumption University, where he taught English literature for about two decades and founded and directed the university’s teaching center. He is the author of multiple books on teaching and learning, including Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning (Jossey-Bass; 1st ed. 2016, 2nd ed. 2021), Distracted: Why Students Can’t Focus and What You Can Do About It (Basic Books, 2020), Small Teaching Online: Applying Learning Science in Online Classes (with Flower Darby, 2019), Cheating Lessons: Learning From Academic Dishonesty (Harvard University Press, 2013), and On Course: A Week-by-Week Guide to Your First Semester of College Teaching (Harvard University Press, 2008). He also writes a long-running column on teaching and learning for The Chronicle of Higher Education and has published reviews and essays on higher education in outlets such as the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Time, The Conversation, Commonweal, and America.
