Jan Chappuis

Jan Chappuis is an educator, author, and independent consultant specializing in classroom assessment literacy and formative assessment. She has worked as both an elementary and secondary teacher and as a curriculum developer in English/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and world languages, and for more than 25 years has written books and developed workshops focused on classroom assessment practices that support student learning. A nationally recognized expert in formative assessment, she has presented to audiences nationally and internationally and previously worked for twelve years at the Assessment Training Institute in Portland, Oregon before continuing her work as an educational writer and consultant.

Chappuis is a coauthor of Ten Assessment Literacy Goals for School Leaders (Corwin, 2021), written with Steve Chappuis and Susan M. Brookhart, which guides school leaders through essential assessment literacy goals and practices. Her other publications include books such as Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning and work on classroom assessment and quality assessment practices, all aimed at helping educators design accurate assessments, use results formatively, and establish grading and communication practices that support student achievement.
