Jana Echevarria

Jana Echevarría, Ph.D., is a Professor Emerita at California State University, Long Beach, where she received the university’s Outstanding Professor award for excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service. A national expert on instruction for multilingual and English learners, she is a founding researcher and co-creator of the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) Model, and has published widely on effective instruction for multilingual learners, including those with learning disabilities. Her teaching experience spans elementary and secondary settings in special education, ESL, and bilingual programs, informed by her earlier career as a classroom teacher before earning her doctorate in education from UCLA.

Echevarría is the author and co-author of numerous books and materials for educators, notably Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: The SIOP Model, now in multiple editions, and No More Low Expectations for English Learners (NOT THIS, BUT THAT), which examines how teacher attitudes and research-based practices impact English learners’ academic achievement. She has presented her research across the United States and internationally, including at Oxford University, Wits University, Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Barcelona, and South East Europe University, where she served as a Fulbright Specialist
