Jeff Zwiers

Jeff Zwiers is an educational researcher, consultant, and teacher educator whose work focuses on academic language, classroom communication, and learning for multilingual and diverse students. He has served as a senior researcher at the Stanford Graduate School of Education and teaches in the Stanford Teacher Education Program, working with the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching and the Understanding Language initiative to improve instruction and assessment for multilingual learners. Zwiers earned his Ed.D. from the University of San Francisco and has taught English, Spanish, science, and history in elementary, middle, and high school settings, including bilingual classrooms.

Zwiers is the author of numerous books and articles on literacy, academic language, thinking, communication, and classroom conversation, including Building Academic Language: Meeting Common Core Standards Across Disciplines, Grades 5–12, The K-3 Guide to Academic Conversations: Practices, Scaffolds, and Activities, Next Steps with Academic Conversations: New Ideas for Improving Learning Through Classroom Talk, Overhauling Learning for Multilingual Students: An Approach for Achieving Pedagogical Justice, and The Communication Effect: How to Enhance Learning by Building Ideas and Bridging Information Gaps. His work also extends to international education projects, such as consulting on Guatemala Education Reform in the Classroom to support bilingual education and teacher training, and
