Jessica Shumway

Jessica F. Shumway is a mathematics education scholar and classroom practitioner whose work focuses on developing students’ number sense through daily, structured routines. She is an associate professor of mathematics education in the School of Teacher Education and Leadership at Utah State University, where she specializes in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in mathematics education and leadership. Shumway holds a PhD in Education from Utah State University, an MEd in Elementary Education and teaching certificates in Elementary Education and English as a Second Language from The George Washington University, and previously taught elementary school and worked as a Title I mathematics coach in Fairfax County Public Schools.

Shumway is the author of Number Sense Routines: Building Numerical Literacy Every Day in Grades K–3 and Number Sense Routines: Building Mathematical Understanding Every Day in Grades 3–5, which present short, adaptable classroom routines designed to strengthen students’ foundational number sense and mathematical reasoning. She also created the professional development video Go Figure! Number Sense Routines that Build Mathematical Understanding, which showcases these routines in elementary classrooms.
