Jon-Philip Imbrenda

Jon-Philip “Jay” Imbrenda was a literacy scholar and educator whose work focused on academic literacy, argument writing, and educational equity for students from underserved communities. He coauthored Developing Writers of Argument: Tools and Rules That Sharpen Student Reasoning with Michael W. Smith, a Corwin Literacy title that offers classroom lessons and tools to help students construct well-reasoned written arguments.

Imbrenda earned his doctorate in the Literacies & Learners program at Temple University’s College of Education, where he received the Graduate Student Teaching Award in 2015 and the Dr. Rita Wolotkiewicz Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in 2016. He later served as a visiting assistant professor in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh, conducting research on academic literacy and college-access initiatives. His article “Developing Academic Literacy: Breakthroughs and Barriers in a College-access Intervention,” published in Research in the Teaching of English, received the 2019 Arthur Applebee Award for Excellence in Research on Literacy, one of the field’s top honors.
