José Ignacio Hualde

José Ignacio Hualde is a Spanish linguist and professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he teaches in the Departments of Spanish and Portuguese and Linguistics. His research focuses on Basque linguistics and Spanish synchronic and diachronic phonology, as well as prosody, pitch accent, Romance linguistics, and historical linguistics.

He earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Southern California and previously completed degrees there in linguistics and Spanish; he also holds a licenciatura in law from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Hualde is the co-author of Introducción a la lingüística hispánica, a Spanish-language introduction to Spanish linguistics that has appeared in multiple editions from Cambridge University Press.
