Joseph F. Murphy

Joseph F. Murphy is a professor of education and educational leadership scholar whose work focuses on school improvement, leadership, and policy. He serves as the Frank W. Mayborn Chair and associate dean at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development and has previously held faculty positions at the University of Illinois and The Ohio State University, where he was the William Ray Flesher Professor of Education. He is a past vice president of the American Educational Research Association and was the founding chair of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC), widely known for directing the development and later revision of the ISLLC Standards for School Leaders.

Murphy is a highly published author in the field of educational administration and school leadership, having authored or co‑authored dozens of books on topics such as school improvement, teacher leadership, literacy, and leadership preparation.
