Karen D. Wood

Dr. Karen D. Wood is a professor of reading and literacy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she has trained literacy specialists for over 25 years in the Department of Reading and Elementary Education. A former middle school reading teacher, reading specialist, and K–12 literacy coordinator, she has authored more than 175 articles, chapters, and books focused on translating literacy research and theory into effective classroom practice, particularly in upper elementary, middle, and high school settings.

Wood is coauthor of Smuggling Writing: Strategies That Get Students to Write Every Day, in Every Content Area, Grades 3–12 and Mining Complex Text, Grades 6–12: Using and Creating Graphic Organizers to Grasp Content and Share New Understandings, and an author of Mining Complex Text, Grades 2–5: Using and Creating Graphic Organizers to Grasp Content and Share New Understandings. She also coedited Literacy Instruction for Adolescents: Research-Based Practice, a comprehensive resource on adolescent literacy that links current research to classroom practice. Her work centers on content-area literacy (K–12), digital literacy, vocabulary and comprehension, and instructional strategies for diverse learners.
