Karen Mesmer

Karen Mesmer, PhD, is a science educator and consultant who taught middle and high school science for 33 years in northwest Alaska and Baraboo, Wisconsin. She holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction–Science Education from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and has served as a science coach supporting implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in grades K–12 in the Baraboo School District. Mesmer has been active in professional organizations, including serving as President of the National Middle Level Science Teachers Association and on the boards of both the National Science Teachers Association and the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers.

After retiring from classroom teaching in 2015, Mesmer founded Mesmer Science Education Consulting, working as a curriculum writer, reviewer, mentor, and professional development facilitator focused on NGSS-aligned instruction. She has written articles for science teacher journals such as Science Scope and contributed book chapters for the National Science Teachers Association. Her work has been recognized with multiple honors, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, the Ron Gibbs Award for lifetime contributions to science education in Wisconsin, a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, a Kohl Fellowship, and the Ohaus Award for innovation in science education.
