Kate Murphy

Kate Murphy is a Houston, Texas–based journalist and author whose reporting has appeared in outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Agence France-Presse, and Texas Monthly. Known for her accessible style and focus on the science of human interaction, she covers a wide range of subjects, from health and technology to business, design, aviation, and interpersonal communication.

Murphy is the author of You’re Not Listening: What You’re Missing and Why It Matters, first published in 2020, an international bestseller that has been translated into multiple languages and adopted in interpersonal communication courses worldwide. For the book, she drew on extensive research in psychology, neuroscience, and sociology and interviewed professionals whose work centers on listening, including psychotherapists, hostage negotiators, CIA interrogators, and focus group moderators.
