Kate Seltzer

Kate Seltzer, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of ESL and Bilingual Education at Rowan University, where she focuses on bilingual education, English education, TESOL education, and sociolinguistics. Her research centers on translanguaging, literacy, and teacher education, drawing on her earlier career as a high school English Language Arts teacher in New York City working with emergent bilingual students. She received her Ph.D. in Urban Education from the CUNY Graduate Center, after completing an M.S. in Secondary/English Education at CUNY Lehman College and a B.A. in English and Women’s Studies from The George Washington University.

Seltzer is co-author of The Translanguaging Classroom: Leveraging Student Bilingualism for Learning (Caslon), written with Ofelia García and Susana Ibarra Johnson, as well as Translanguaging: A CUNY–NYSIEB Guide for Educators. Her award‑winning scholarship on translanguaging and critical translingual approaches to English teaching has appeared in journals including English Education, Research in the Teaching of English, TESOL Quarterly, and Language, Identity and Education, and has been recognized with honors such as the Alan
