Kate Zambreno

Kate Zambreno (born December 30, 1977 in Mount Prospect, Illinois) is an American novelist, essayist, critic, and professor known for formally adventurous works that blur the boundaries between fiction, memoir, and criticism. She is the author of the novels O Fallen Angel and Green Girl, as well as the nonfiction works Heroines and Book of Mutter, a meditation on grief, memory, and art composed over thirteen years following the death of her mother.

Zambreno has also published later books including Drifts, To Write as If Already Dead, and The Light Room, and her writing has appeared in venues such as The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Granta, and Virginia Quarterly Review. She teaches writing in the graduate nonfiction program at Columbia University and at Sarah Lawrence College, and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Nonfiction in 2021.
