Katharine Covino

Katharine Covino is an associate professor of English Studies at Fitchburg State University, where she focuses on English education and issues of intellectual freedom, including censorship in schools. She is a longtime member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Committee Against Censorship, contributing scholarship and professional service centered on book challenges and their impact on teachers and curricula.

Covino is a co-editor of The Impacts of Censorship: Research on the Intersection of Censorship and Teaching English (Volume 1), a research collection published by the National Council of Teachers of English that examines contemporary censorship pressures in English language arts classrooms. She also serves as one of the editors of The Impacts of Censorship – Volume 2: The Voices and Experiences of Classroom Teachers, to which she contributed a co‑authored article developed from an undergraduate honors thesis on book censorship. In addition, Covino co-edits the “Teaching in a Time of Censorship” column in English Journal, where she and Ann David explore concepts such as moral injury and “moral traps” as they relate to censorship and the work of English teachers.
