Katherine Bomer
Katherine Bomer is an internationally known literacy and writing consultant, author, and frequent keynote speaker whose career began with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. A former classroom teacher for ten years, she has spent more than two decades working with K–12 teachers as a professional developer, focusing on how attention to craft helps young writers grow beyond what traditional assessments capture. She serves as a lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin and works nationally as a literacy consultant and author.
Bomer is the author of several influential professional books for educators, including The Journey Is Everything: Teaching Essays That Students Want to Write for People Who Want to Read Them, Hidden Gems, Starting with What Students Do Best, and Writing a Life. She is also coauthor of For a Better World (with Randy Bomer) and A Writer’s Shelf (with Lucy Calkins). In addition, she wrote the foreword to Poems Are Teachers: How Studying Poetry Strengthens Writing in All Genres and coauthored A Teacher’s Guide to Writing Workshop Essentials: Time, Choice, Response in the Classroom Essentials Series. A published poet and essayist, Bomer was recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English with the 2017 Outstanding Elementary Educator Award.
