Kathy Champeau

Kathy Champeau is a reading specialist, literacy consultant, and past president of the Wisconsin State Reading Association (WSRA) with more than four decades of experience in literacy education. She has taught first and third grades, served as a Title I reading teacher, and worked as a reading specialist and literacy coach in 4K–5th grade classrooms. Champeau was an adjunct instructor at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee for 28 years, teaching performance-based reading intervention courses, and has testified at state government hearings on proposed literacy policies and legislation. She has also served on Governor Walker’s Read to Lead Task Force and multiple Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction work groups, including the State Assessment Consortium.

Champeau is a coauthor of Engaging Literate Minds: Developing Children’s Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Lives, K–3, written with Peter H. Johnston and teacher collaborators, a book that chronicles the results of ten years of her literacy coaching work and received an honorable mention for the Literacy Research Association’s Edward B. Fry Book Award. She has co-edited Response to Interventions at the Crossroads and contributed research articles on high-stakes assessment.
