Kylene Beers

Kylene Beers was an American literacy educator, author, and consultant whose work focused on adolescent literacy and reading instruction. According to publisher and professional sources, she began her career as a middle school language arts teacher outside Houston, later taught in the College of Education at the University of Houston, and served as Senior Reading Researcher at the Comer School Development Program at Yale University and later as Senior Reading Advisor to Secondary Schools for the Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Beers earned an Ed.D. and was a former president of the National Council of Teachers of English. She co-authored Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and Reading Nonfiction: Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies with Bob Probst, co-edited Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice with Bob Probst and Linda Rief, and wrote When Kids Can’t Read—What Teachers Can Do and Forged by Reading: The Power of a Literate Life; publisher sources also list Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters among her major books.
