Laurie Wallmark

Laurie Wallmark is an award-winning children’s author who writes primarily picture book biographies of women in STEM, highlighting innovators in fields such as computer science, mathematics, cryptography, and invention. Her works include Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine, Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code, Hedy Lamarr’s Double Life: Hollywood Legend and Brilliant Inventor, Numbers in Motion: Sophie Kowalevski, Queen of Mathematics, Code Breaker, Spy Hunter: How Elizebeth Friedman Changed the Course of Two World Wars, and The Queen of Chess: How Judit Polgár Changed the Game. Her books have received multiple starred reviews and honors, including recognition as Outstanding Science Trade Books, Cook Prize Honors, the Crystal Kite Award, and listings on the AAAS/Subaru Prize longlist.

Wallmark has a biochemistry degree from Princeton University, a degree in information systems from Goddard College, and an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as a software engineer, computer science professor, and owner of a mail-order book company, and she has taught computer science in both traditional classrooms and prison education programs.
