Lawrence Schimel

Lawrence Schimel (born 1971 in New York) is a bilingual author, anthologist, and literary translator who writes in both Spanish and English and has published well over one hundred books across genres including fiction, poetry, essays, graphic novels, and children’s literature. He is the co-author of HaiCuba/HaiKuba: Haikus about Cuba in Spanish and English, working alongside Cuban-American writer Carlos Pintado.

Schimel studied at Yale University, has lived in Madrid, Spain since 1999, and is also known for his work as a translator between Spanish and English. His books and translations have received numerous honors, including two Lambda Literary Awards for queer-themed anthologies, a Crystal Kite Award from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and selections as White Ravens and IBBY Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities.
