Lidia Gonzalez

Dr. Lidia Gonzalez is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at York College of the City University of New York, where she focuses on mathematics education, particularly in urban settings. A first-generation college graduate, she began her career as a high school mathematics teacher in a large comprehensive public high school in New York City and later earned her Ph.D. in Urban Education from the CUNY Graduate Center, following a B.S. and M.A. in Mathematics Education from New York University.

Her research centers on the teaching of mathematics for social justice, the development of mathematics identity, and teacher education and professional development, with the goal of improving the mathematical experiences of urban students. She is the author of Bad at Math?: Dismantling Harmful Beliefs That Hinder Equitable Mathematics Education (Corwin, 2023), which examines how pervasive negative beliefs about mathematics contribute to inequities in math education and offers guidance for creating more equitable learning environments.
