Lisa M. Baumgartner

Lisa M. Baumgartner (Lisa M. Baumgartner, Ed.D.) is a Professor of Adult Education in the Adult, Professional, and Community Education program at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She co‑authored Learning in Adulthood: A Comprehensive Guide (3rd and 4th editions), a widely cited text in adult education published by Jossey‑Bass that has been described as a staple in adult education programs and has received the Cyril O. Houle Award for Outstanding Literature in Adult Education from the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education.

Her research focuses on learning and development in marginalized populations, including older adults, women, individuals living with chronic illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, people in gender‑responsive jail programs, and women academics who experience bullying. Baumgartner holds an Ed.D. in Adult Education from the University of Georgia, an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Ball State University, and a B.A. in Psychology from Augsburg College. In addition to Learning in Adulthood, she has co‑edited volumes on adult learning such as Methods for Facilitating Adult Learning (Routledge) and An Update on Adult Learning Theory (Wiley), and was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame in 2024
