Lori Marie Carlson

Lori Marie Carlson is an editor, translator, novelist, and anthologist known for bringing Latino and other underrepresented literatures to young American readers. Born in Jamestown, New York, she holds an M.A. in Hispanic Literature from Indiana University and began her literary career as an editor and translator at the Americas Society in New York City. She has taught at several universities and has published numerous books for children, young adults, and adults.

Carlson is the editor of Red Hot Salsa: Bilingual Poems on Being Young and Latino in the United States, a poetry anthology featuring contemporary Latino voices and exploring themes of identity, culture, and family. She previously edited the influential collection Cool Salsa: Bilingual Poems on Growing Up Latino in the United States, as well as other bilingual anthologies such as Sol a Sol and Moccasin Thunder: American Indian Stories for Today. Her works for adults include the novels The Sunday Tertulia, The Flamboyant, and A Stitch in Air. Carlson married Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist Oscar Hijuelos in 1998 and is described as his widow.
