Luz Yadira Herrera

Luz Yadira Herrera, Ph.D., is a teacher, researcher, and author specializing in the education of emergent bilingual students. She is a co-founder of the En Comunidad Collective and co-author of En Comunidad: Lessons for Centering the Voices and Experiences of Bilingual Latinx Students with Carla España. Her teaching and research focus on culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogy, translanguaging, critical pedagogies, and bilingual education policy, grounded in extensive experience working with bilingual Latinx students in K–12 and higher education settings.

Herrera began her career teaching emergent bilinguals in New York City public schools, working with K–6 students in Harlem. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at institutions including the City College of New York, Long Island University, and Brooklyn College, and has held assistant professor positions in bilingual, multilingual, and multicultural education at multiple California State University campuses. She holds a B.A. in International Development Studies and Portuguese from the University of California, Los Angeles, an M.A. in TESOL from Pace University, and a Ph.D. in Urban Education from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
