María E. Fránquiz

María E. Fránquiz is a professor of language and literacy studies in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas at Austin, where she coordinates the bilingual/bicultural studies area. An internationally recognized scholar in language, literacy, and bilingual/multicultural education, she has more than thirty years of experience as a teacher, teacher educator, researcher, and academic administrator, including service as dean of the College of Education at the University of Utah and deputy chief academic officer for faculty development and innovation. She earned her PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a dissertation on transformations in bilingual classrooms, and is co-editor of the Bilingual Research Journal.

Fránquiz is coauthor of Cultivating Young Multilingual Writers: Nurturing Voices and Stories in and beyond the Classroom Walls (with Tracey T. Flores), a book for K–5 educators that centers the cultures, languages, and identities of young writers and draws on the resources students bring from home and community. She has also coedited the volumes Inside the Latin@ Experience: A Latin@ Studies Reader and Scholars in the Field: The Challenges of Migrant Education, and has published widely on humanizing pedagogies, Latinx teacher preparation, and Latinx children’s literature
