Marc Todd

Marc Todd is a social studies teacher at IS 289, the Hudson River Middle School in New York City, and a national presenter for the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. In his work with teachers across the United States and internationally, he leads workshops and institutes on culturally relevant pedagogy and on helping students become critical readers of history.

Todd is a co-author of The Civically Engaged Classroom: Reading, Writing, and Speaking for Change, written with Mary Ehrenworth and Pablo Wolfe and published by Heinemann, as well as co-author of the Unit of Study: Historical Fiction Book Clubs. His classroom practice emphasizes immersing students in nonfiction reading, using notebook work as a serious yet joyful part of content learning, and incorporating ideas from Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed into his curriculum.
