    Marcia Kierland Henry

    Marcia K. Henry, Ph.D., is an educator and researcher with more than 40 years of experience in the fields of reading and dyslexia, working as a diagnostician, tutor, teacher, professor, and author. She received her doctorate in educational psychology from Stanford University and served as a professor in the Division of Special Education at San Jose State University, where she directed the Center for Educational Research on Dyslexia until her retirement in 1995. In 1991 she was a Fulbright Lecturer/Research Scholar at the University of Trondheim in Norway and has since taught at the University of New Mexico, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Minnesota–Duluth.

    Henry is the author of Unlocking Literacy: Effective Decoding & Spelling Instruction, a widely used text that integrates decoding and spelling instruction and is recognized as a key resource for teachers working with struggling and dyslexic readers. She has written teaching materials for integrated decoding and spelling instruction, publishes in professional journals, and has served on the editorial boards of Dyslexia and Annals of Dyslexia. A past president (1992–1996) of the Orton Dyslexia Society (now the International Dyslexia Association) and a fellow of the Orton-Gillingham Academy, she received the Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award from the
