Margaret G. McKeown

Margaret G. McKeown, PhD, is a Clinical Professor Emerita of Education in the School of Education and Senior Scientist at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research focuses on reading comprehension and vocabulary, including the effects of vocabulary knowledge on comprehension and the development of instructional approaches that help students construct meaning from text. Before her research career, she taught reading and language arts in elementary school.

McKeown is widely recognized for co-developing robust vocabulary instruction and the Questioning the Author approach with Isabel L. Beck. She is coauthor of Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction and Creating Robust Vocabulary: Frequently Asked Questions and Extended Examples, along with other works such as Robust Comprehension Instruction with Questioning the Author and Vocabulary Assessment to Support Instruction. Her contributions have been honored with the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the International Literacy Association (formerly International Reading Association), a National Academy of Education Spencer postdoctoral fellowship, election as a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association, and induction into the Reading Hall of Fame.
