Mariale M. Hardiman

Mariale M. Hardiman, EdD, is a professor of education and Professor Emeritus at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education and cofounder and director of the university’s Neuro-Education Initiative, a cross-disciplinary program that connects research from the learning sciences with classroom practice. Before joining Johns Hopkins in 2006, she spent more than 30 years in Baltimore City Public Schools in roles including teacher, department chair, assistant principal, principal, mentor principal, and professional development specialist; as principal of Roland Park Elementary/Middle School, she led the school to recognition as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. She earned her doctorate in education from Johns Hopkins University.

Hardiman is the creator of the Brain-Targeted Teaching® Model, a framework that integrates findings from neuro- and cognitive sciences to support effective teaching, arts integration, and creative problem-solving. She is the author of The Brain-Targeted Teaching Model: A Framework for Joyful Learning and Leading (2nd edition), as well as earlier works including Connecting Brain Research with Effective Teaching: The Brain-Targeted Teaching Model and articles such as “Informing Pedagogy Through the Brain-Targeted Teaching Model.” Her research on arts-integrated instruction and memory for science content has
