Marie K. Norman

Marie K. Norman is a professor of medicine and clinical and translational science at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where she directs the Innovative Design for Education and Assessment (IDEA) Lab) in the Institute for Clinical Research Education. Her work focuses on education and training, team science, human‑centered design, and faculty well‑being, and she has more than 30 years of experience teaching in higher education. In 2024, she received a Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award recognizing her leadership in developing online programs that support underrepresented minority researchers and mentors.

Norman is co‑author of How Learning Works: Seven Research‑Based Principles for Smart Teaching (Jossey‑Bass, 2010), a widely cited book on evidence‑based teaching that has been released in a second edition as How Learning Works: Eight Research‑Based Principles for Smart Teaching. She holds a BA in Sociology/Anthropology from Oberlin College and a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh, along with a certificate and MA in Asian Studies/Anthropology from Pitt.
