Marilyn Burns
Marilyn Burns is a renowned mathematics educator and the author of About Teaching Mathematics, Fourth Edition: A K–8 Resource, along with more than a dozen additional books for children and over twenty professional development resources for teachers and administrators. Born in 1941, she earned a B.A. from Syracuse University and began her career teaching elementary and middle school students in Syracuse, New York before becoming one of the most respected voices in K–8 mathematics instruction.
In 1984, Burns founded Math Solutions, a professional development organization dedicated to improving math instruction in grades K–8, through courses, materials, and consulting for teachers and administrators. Over a career spanning more than five decades, she has taught children across the United States, led in‑service workshops, spoken at conferences, contributed to professional journals, and developed influential programs such as Do The Math, Do The Math Now!, and the Math Reasoning Inventory, all focused on strengthening students’ understanding of number, operations, and mathematical reasoning.
