Mark E. Beck, MEd, is a reading specialist at Manchester Academic Charter School in Pittsburgh, where he works with children in grades K–5. After practicing law for 14 years, he changed careers, obtained Pennsylvania elementary teaching certification, and worked as a classroom teacher before later earning his reading specialist certification. He has also served as a part-time instructor in the Reading Department in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh.
Beck is the coauthor of Making Sense of Phonics: The Hows and Whys, including its second and third editions, written with Isabel L. Beck and published by Guilford Press as a practitioner-focused guide to explicit, systematic phonics instruction for the primary grades.
