Marsha C. Lovett

Marsha C. Lovett, PhD, is vice provost for teaching and learning innovation and a teaching professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, where her work focuses on cognitive and learning sciences. She oversees Carnegie Mellon’s Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and Educational Innovation and leads university-wide initiatives in educational innovation, learning analytics, and online learning, including co-coordinating The Simon Initiative.

An expert in learning science, Lovett has published more than 50 research articles on learning, memory, problem solving, and instruction, and has helped develop educational technologies such as StatTutor and the Learning Dashboard. She is a coauthor of How Learning Works: Eight Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching (second edition), published by Jossey-Bass in 2023, which builds on earlier work on seven research-based principles for effective teaching. Lovett holds a bachelor’s degree in cognitive science from Princeton University and master’s and doctoral degrees in cognitive psychology from Carnegie Mellon University.
