Mary K. Gove

Mary K. Gove, PhD, is a professor emeritus at Cleveland State University and a longtime advocate for literacy, teacher learning, and ecological education. Before her university career, she taught grades K–6, worked as a reading specialist for grades 1–6, and served as a full-time professional developer in an urban school district, where she led award-winning professional development programs in the 1990s. Her doctoral dissertation, Beliefs About Reading, is noted as a cornerstone reference in literacy textbooks.

Dr. Gove is coauthor of the widely used textbook Reading and Learning to Read and has written numerous articles and book chapters on literacy, critical literacy, teacher action research, and ecological awareness. She is coauthor of The Green Literacy Handbook: Inspire Environmental Stewardship Through Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing, Grades K–5, which integrates environmental themes with K–5 literacy instruction. Her work in green literacy includes grant-funded projects that use children’s literature and digital media for critical pedagogy, and she has presented at conferences such as the National Literacy Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment, and the Green Schools National Network.
