Matthew R. Kay
Matthew R. Kay is a Philadelphia educator and author who teaches English at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia. He is a founding teacher at the school and has also taught elective courses in Drama, Critical Race Theory, and African American Literature.
Kay is the author of Not Light, but Fire: How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Classroom and Prompting Deeper Discussions: A Teacher’s Guide to Crafting Great Questions; he is also the co-author of Answers to Your Biggest Questions About Teaching Middle and High School ELA and We’re Gonna Keep on Talking: How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Elementary Classroom. He is the founder and co-director of Philly Slam League, a nonprofit that runs spoken word competitions and workshops for young people in the Philadelphia area.
