Matthew R. Larson

Matthew R. Larson, PhD, is an award-winning mathematics educator and author who served as the K–12 mathematics curriculum specialist for Lincoln Public Schools in Nebraska for more than twenty years. He began his career as a high school mathematics teacher and has taught mathematics at levels ranging from elementary through college. Larson served as president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), a 70,000-member international mathematics education organization, from 2016 to 2018. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in history with a minor in mathematics and secondary mathematics certification, as well as an M.Ed. and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, all from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Larson is the coauthor of numerous mathematics textbooks and professional resources, including works in the Every Student Can Learn Mathematics series such as Mathematics Unit Planning in a PLC at Work®, Grades 3–5 and Mathematics Unit Planning in a PLC at Work®, High School. He is also coauthor of Balancing the Equation: A Guide to School Mathematics for Educators and Parents and contributed to influential NCTM publications such as Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All and Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations.
