Megan Loef Franke

Megan Loef Franke is a professor of education in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where her research focuses on teacher learning for both preservice and in-service teachers, diversity in mathematics education, and leadership in urban, low-performing schools. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. in education from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and was elected to the National Academy of Education in recognition of her contributions to the field.

Franke is widely known for her leadership in the development and study of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) and for her work with UCLA’s Center X and related professional development initiatives that support teachers, schools, and communities. She is a coauthor of Children’s Mathematics, Second Edition: Cognitively Guided Instruction and Young Children’s Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction in Early Childhood Education, which draw on decades of classroom-based research on children’s mathematical thinking and CGI-informed teaching practice.
