Michael D. Steele

Michael D. Steele is a Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Educational Studies in Teachers College at Ball State University, where his work focuses on supporting secondary mathematics teachers in developing mathematical knowledge for teaching and integrating content and pedagogy through teacher preparation and professional development. He previously served as a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University, and earlier worked as a middle and high school mathematics and science teacher. Steele holds a Doctor of Education in mathematics education from the University of Pittsburgh.

Steele is a Past President of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, a director-at-large of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and editor of the journal Mathematics Teacher Educator. His publications for practitioners include Transform Your Math Class Using Asset-Based Teaching for Grades 6–12 (Corwin Mathematics Series) and The Five Practices in Practice [High School]: Successfully Orchestrating Mathematics Discussions in Your High School Classroom, co-authored with Margaret (Peg) Smith and Miriam Gamoran Sherin.
