Michael F. Graves

Michael F. Graves is a professor emeritus of literacy education at the University of Minnesota and a member of the Reading Hall of Fame. He holds a PhD in education from Stanford University and a BA and MA in English from California State University, Long Beach, and earlier in his career he taught in the upper grades. His research and writing focus on vocabulary learning and instruction, reading comprehension and strategy instruction, learning from text, instruction for English learners, and motivation.

Graves is the author of numerous influential works on reading and vocabulary, including Teaching Individual Words: One Size Does Not Fit All (Teachers College Press and IRA, 2009), The Vocabulary Book (2006, with a second edition noted as forthcoming), and Teaching Vocabulary to English-Language Learners (2012, with Diane August and Jeannette Mancilla-Martinez). He is also a lead author of Teaching Reading in the 21st Century, a widely used text on reading instruction that has appeared in multiple editions.
